The Stand is the sixth episode of the first season in Dragon Booster. It first aired in Canada on November 30, 2004. It was then aired in USA on December 4, 2004 and in Australia on March 24, 2005.

Plot Summary[]

The episode opens with Moordryd Paynn and his crew stealing dragons for Word to make wraith dragon. The Dragon Booster arrives, releases the captured dragons, and overwhelms the Dragon Eyes. Word tells Moordryd to retreat. At Penn Stables, Parmon insists Artha to practice for the race next day but Artha is exhausted and goes to sleep. At his citadel, Word plots to steal Artha's dragon and turn him into a wraith dragon -- his weapon against the Black and Gold Dragon of Legend.

The next day at the All-City Racing circuit tents, Parmon points out to an unenthusiastic Artha that they need both points and gear to make it to the Level 2 competitions -- Artha suggests going straight into Level 3 competitions that would reward them with much more gear, Dracals and points. Parmon points out that Artha lacks both training and gear for such a challenge as Cain, disguised as a Dragon Flares crew member, approaches them and directs Artha to a sponsor named "Ro". Parmon is suspicious and dismisses the idea, but Artha goes ahead and meets the sponsor in "Building 1-9-8-5". The sponsor, without letting Artha know his identity, sweet-talks him into trying out a level 6 Green Ramming gear much to the disapproval of Parmon and Beau. Unbeknownst to Artha, the sponsor is actually Word Paynn.

The next day at the racetrack, Artha walks in late and is surprised to find the new gear missing. Parmon explains, to Artha's dismay, that they will need to practice before using it in a real race. As the race begins, Parmon tells Artha that on the next lap he can mag some other gear if needed, except the new gear. Artha is tripped by one of his competitors and Beau loses Draconium energy quickly. Parmon tells Artha to mag Blue Turning and Brown Bashing gear at the next gear pit but he takes mags the new Green gear. Beau is visibly uncomfortable with the new gear but Artha forcefully mags it on him. Satisfied with the completion of the first stage of his plan, Word commands Moordryd to stir trouble to lure the Dragon Booster.

Using his wraith dragon controller, Word takes control of Beau and gets him to fire a ramming shot to destroy the Blue Balancing gear of the player in front of Artha just before a deadly leap. The player stops just short of falling off the track as Beau jumps over him. Word activates his Red Thruster gear mid-air and Beau leaps into first place to win the race.

At the tents, Artha finds out that Beau can't de-mag the gear no matter how hard he tries, even breaking off a piece in the struggle. Artha decides to take Beau to Mortis for advice while Parmon and Lance clear up the tent. Moordryd and Cain scare some dragons and start a stampede. Parmon and Lance, who were heading back to the stables, are caught in the stampede. Word makes Beau run off and join the stampede, enabling his wraith gear to lie in wait for the Dragon Booster.

Mortis examines the piece of Artha's new gear to reveal that it is Paynn's re-painted Black Psi gear. News of the stampede reaches them. Artha transforms into the Dragon Booster and sets off to find Beau to quell the stampede. He makes it to an overpass in the path of the stampeding dragons, but seismic vibrations caused by them make it collapse. He gains consciousness on a pile of rubble, remorseful, and calls out to Beau. His amulet shines and golden mag-streams guide themselves to Beau and communicate Artha’s feelings to him. Beau smashes his head against a nearby wall and breaks the wraith gear, foiling Word's plan. He reunites with Artha and they head back to stop the stampede.

Parmon uses Lance's flash-stick and Vid Game to innovate a device that projects a huge dragon from the game to scare the dragons off the main road. Artha wishes he could just speak to the dragons to calm them down like he did with Beau. Upon hearing this, Beau sets off to do just that, calling out to the stampeding dragons and quelling them. The episode ends with Artha finally having realized the importance of practice.

Important Events[]

  • Word Paynn admires and sets his eyes on Artha's dragon, not knowing it is the Black and Gold Dragon of legend.
  • This is the first time in the series Word speaks to Artha directly.
  • First appearance of Beau in wraith form.

Quotes[]

  • "I am someone interested in helping you, the son of the great Connor Penn. Everyone knows you, Artha; such talent, such skill! But I am guessing that things are getting...hard for you, without a father and all, no time to be a kid anymore, is there? No time for games, no time for fun -- it's always practice, practice, practice...I can help you with all of that." - Word Paynn
  • "A dragon stampede, in my honour? How fitting." - Word Paynn
  • “This is all my fault. We didn’t need anybody else’s help -- we needed each other’s. Beau… I need you.” - Artha as the Dragon Booster.

Trivia[]

  • Beau rejecting the new gear during the race is the first clue that it is not what it seems. Green Ramming gear usually attaches to a dragon’s chest, not its head.
